When I first began making soap, probably just like you, I searched around on the internet, trying to find recipes, not really knowing what I was looking for, or how to find it. Several things quickly became clear to me...

1. Soap purchased from stores has become so filled with chemicals that it should no longer be called soap at all, but let's be honest if the manufacturer called it "skin detergent" how many sales do you think they would make?

2. One of the main ingredients of just about every commercially available skin "cleanser" is a chemical known to cause eye defects in children, this chemical is also thought to cause cancer!

3. Soap is a naturally occurring substance that only actually requires two ingredients (ok, three if you include water).

4. Different oils/fats will produce soap with different qualities.

5. It is possible to create your own soap, safely and very easily, which takes advantage of the qualities in the different oils/fats, a soap which is lovely to use and good for your skin and completely avoids the chance of exposing you and your loved ones to harmful chemicals.

 

 But that still left me with a problem...

I was beginning to understand that some oils would offer a specific benefit, but I didn't know what quantity to use per batch of soap, or what other oils to use and what effect they would have.

So I decided to do some further research and after a great deal of time I found I had built quite a useful list, with descriptions of the qualities of the oils and how they could be used for soap making, for instance did you know... 

·         The oil which creates light fluffy bubbles, but if you use too much it can create a hard soap which can be drying to the skin (hint, if you have been soaping for even a short period of time you will probably know the answer to that one)?

·         Which oils to choose to treat Eczema, Psoriasis and sun-damaged skin?

·         What substance to use to add hardness to your bar of soap?

·         Which oil filters the sun's rays and is common in sun care and tanning products?

·         Which oil has a structure which closely resembles that of skin sebum and is beneficial for all skin types?

·         What to use if you require an antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic agent?

·         Which oil helps skin cell regeneration of the top layer of the skin and reduces scars?

·         What ingredient should be added at the rate of 0.5 ounce per pound of base oils, to harden soap?
